When Dinner Turns Into a Memory

Chris and I celebrated our anniversary last night at Angelo’s Taverna in Littleton, off Santa Fe, and it turned into one of those evenings we’ll remember for all the right reasons.

It was a little drive from our home, but we were looking for something special. We had h

eard really good things about Angelo’s Taverna, and honestly, the drive over was beautiful, so the distance didn’t matter at all. If you didn’t know exactly where it was, you might almost pass it — but once we arrived, we knew we had made the right choice.

The restaurant was packed, which is always a good sign, but what impressed us immediately was how the staff handled everything. We never felt like we were just standing around waiting. Someone was always there to greet us, check in, and make sure we felt comfortable from the moment we walked in.

Our server, Ray, was wonderful. She was kind, attentive, and genuinely excited to help us experience the menu for the first time. She asked if we had ever been there before, and when we told her it was our first time, you could see the excitement on her face. It felt like she was truly happy to introduce us to the restaurant.

We started with oysters — which definitely caught our attention, especially coming from Florida and finding oysters like that in Colorado — along with the toasted ravioli, which was incredible. When it came time to choose dinner, we did what we often do at a great restaurant: we asked Ray what she liked.

She started describing a few of her favorite dishes, and by the time she finished the first one, I was already hungry. By the time she finished the second one, I was looking at Chris like, “That’s it.” Ray described the food with so much care and excitement that it made the decision easy. Chris had the Steak Gorgonzola Alfredo, and I had the Pasta Bolognese. Everything was full of flavor, comforting, and beautifully done.

One of our favorite moments of the night came when Ellington Thomas, one of the owners, stopped by our table to ask how everything was. What stood out was that he didn’t just stop by quickly and move on. He actually took the time to have a real conversation with us.

We asked him about the restaurant, the different locations, and how Angelo’s Taverna has grown, and he shared some of that story with us in such a natural and generous way. We may have taken a little more of his time than most tables usually do, but he never made us feel that way. He came across as someone who is genuinely interested in people, not just in running a great restaurant. That kind of personal touch is rare, and it made the evening even more meaningful.

We also asked him about one of the fun things we noticed on the menu: the pizza section. Several of the pizzas are named after iconic albums and artists — names like Nevermind, Ride the Lightning, Pretty Hate Machine, Check Your Head, Mother’s Milk, and 36 Chambers. Chris and I had been talking about it earlier because the music came from a window of time that made absolute sense to both of us.

Ellington explained how the naming came about and how the chefs get to bring some of their own personality and inspiration into the menu. It was such a small detail, but hearing the story behind it made us both smile and look at each other. Not everyone may connect with it the same way, but for Chris and me, it hit the right note.

Then came dessert............ a limoncello cream cake that looked almost too good to touch. When Chris and I first saw it, I think we both just about fell over. And then we tasted it.

Wow!

It was one of those desserts that makes your whole body say, “Yum.” It was the perfect sweet ending to an already wonderful anniversary dinner.

From the food to the service to the atmosphere, Angelo’s Taverna gave us exactly what we were hoping for: a special anniversary dinner, a great story, and an experience that felt personal from beginning to end.

If you’re looking for a place with incredible food, a welcoming staff, and the kind of details that make dinner feel memorable, Angelo’s Taverna in Littleton is absolutely worth the drive.
