Lately, I’ve been focusing on creative outlets that are fun, unique, and easy to do from home. I love making art and crafts, especially when I can create something special without breaking the bank. This year, my family and I decided to tackle a new project: creating a Halloween pumpkin ghost that would last forever. The result? A spooky, charming ghost made from a fake pumpkin that we can use year after year.

Supplies You’ll Need

To get started, we needed a few simple supplies. The first and most important item was the pumpkin itself. While a real pumpkin is traditional, we wanted this decoration to last. So, we opted for a fake, plastic pumpkin.

Where to Find Your Pumpkin

• Michael’s: We found ours here for about $8 to $10, thanks to a great Halloween sale.

• Air-Dry Clay: We picked up a big tub of white air-dry clay from Michael’s for around $8.

Step-by-Step Guide to Your Forever Pumpkin Ghost

Step 1: Roll Out the Clay

Take your air-dry clay and roll it into a flat, even sheet. Here’s a trick: tape two paint stirring sticks together and use them as guides to ensure an even thickness.

Roll out a large, circular piece of clay. Place your pumpkin in the center to gauge the size—you want the clay to drape over the pumpkin like a sheet. Cut out your circle, and you’re ready for the next step!

Step 2: Drape the Clay Over the Pumpkin

Spread a generous amount of clear glue over the top of the pumpkin. Carefully drape your clay sheet over the pumpkin, letting the stem poke through the center. Gently work the clay around the stem to make it look seamless.

Step 3: Shape and Smooth Your Ghost

Lightly wet your fingers with water and press the clay down onto the pumpkin. This helps smooth the surface and prevents cracking. Use the water to accentuate the pumpkin’s natural ridges, giving your ghost a flowing, organic look.

Step 4: Add the Face (Don’t Forget This!)

Before the clay dries, press your thumbs or fingers into the soft clay to create indentations for the eyes and mouth. This step gives your ghost its personality—spooky, happy, or surprised, it’s up to you!

Step 5: Let It Dry and Paint

Once the clay is fully dry, it’s time to paint! I chose classic white for the body and black for the face, but feel free to get creative. Apply at least two coats of paint for a solid, even finish.

Step 6: Seal Your Masterpiece

To protect your work, use a spray sealer like DecoArt Spray Sealer. Spray an even coat all around the ghost, let it dry, and apply a second coat if needed. Don’t forget to seal the bottom!

And just like that, you’re done! You now have a unique Halloween pumpkin ghost that’s sure to be one of the best decorations in your neighborhood.
